Constructing a 2.2km rock wall for the Port of Townsville Channel Upgrade Project

The Port of Townsville is the largest commercial port in northern Australia, however, at just 92 metres wide, the shipping channel is one of the narrowest in the country. With ships getting larger, the port needed to adapt to service the needs of Queensland’s mining, defence, agriculture, construction, vehicle and tourism industries.

As part of the $193 million Channel Upgrade Project, Port of Townsville Limited engaged Hall Contracting to undertake the civil works. The project involved constructing a 2.2km rock wall and creating a 60ha reclamation area for material dredged from the channel.

The scope of works included hauling and placing 266,465m³ of core rock, 39,839m³ of secondary armour stone, 143,682m³ of primary armour stone, and the geotextile lining of the internal surface of the rock wall.
