MAROOCHYDORE, QUEENSLAND
Constructing two groyne structures and a 220-metre seawall
Sunshine Coast Council engaged Hall Contracting to deliver the first stage of the Maroochy Groyne Renewal Project, which has played a vital role in protecting the Cotton Tree coastline against erosion.
The scope of works included removing the existing geotextile container seawall and two northern groynes, as well as constructing two new groyne structures and a 220m seawall.
The structures play an important role in protecting community infrastructure – such as the nearby surf lifesaving tower, viewing deck, car parks, roads, park and playground – from severe erosion.
As part of the project, Hall used purpose-built 5m³ geotextile containers to construct the groynes, significantly increasing the stability of the structures.
In addition to the marine civil works, the team also dredged 50,000m³ of sand from the lower Maroochy River to Maroochydore Beach to assist in upholding the erosion buffer.
