FUNAFUTI, TUVALU, PACIFIC ISLANDS
Designing and constructing two groynes, delivering land reclamation works and beach replenishment dredging
During World War II, the United States military used Funafuti as a base in the Pacific Islands.
To facilitate this, the reef shelf was excavated and hard revetment walls were constructed along the inside of the lagoon to allow access for United States Navy ships. The deeper water and hard revetments caused wave reflection which, over time, denuded the lagoon’s shoreline.
Hall Contracting was engaged by the Government of Tuvalu to replenish the beach along the lagoon and reclaim a large area of sand to be used by the local population as open space.
Hall designed and constructed a solution in a very short timeframe, engaging AECOM as the project designers.
The project involved dredging 200,000m³ of sand and designing and constructing two 80-metre-long groynes.
