Dredging 3,000m³ of contaminated sediments at HMAS Coonawarra

Hall Contracting was engaged by the Australian Department of Defence to undertake dredging works at the Port of Darwin. The works were required to ensure navigability of the port for the HMAS Coonawarra and navy patrol boats.

Key deliverables included:

  • pre and post dredge surveys;
  • dredging 3,000m³ of contaminated sediment materials located underneath the ‘Synchrolift’ ship-lift area to the disposal treatment area;
  • construction of sediment treatment ponds, including a series of lagoons used specifically for the containment and treatment of contaminated marine sediments and associated wastewater;
  • dewatering of contaminated sediments within the lagoons, via gravity through a weir system; and
  • removal of dried sediments to a licensed waste facility.
