Hall Contracting was awarded the design and construction of a discharge pond to capture and manage the dredge discharge material from Ross River on the adjoining Port of Townsville. Once the bunds were in place, Hall Contracting commenced with the removal of approximately 100,000m3 of sediments from Ross River by the Cutter Suction Dredge ‘Everglade’. Hall Contracting developed a methodology to manage the dredge spoil by mixing, moving and stockpiling the dredge material to maintain discharge capacity in the pond.
At the completion of dredging, Hall Contracting then removed the discharge material from the pond and produced a reusable soil. This was achieved by mixing the collected fines with the collected courser material, creating an approximate 20%-80% mixture for re-use as requested by DTMR. The project had environmental performance objectives as conditioned by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection which required daily monitoring.
