The charter of two of Hall Contracting’s 14” dredges ‘Everglade’ and ‘Beenup’ was required to undertake the removal of mud and silts from existing ponds on the site of the future BLCP power station.
Works involved the removal of 766,000m3 of material from the first pond (to allow for structural fill to be placed) and pumping into a holding pond. The holding pond was then dredged to remove the material placed from the first pond (along with material already in the pond before dredging commenced – 1,017,000m3 in total) and pumped to a final deposition pond.
Even though the project called for clean, smooth pond bases for the structural fill to be placed upon, the nature of the pumped material allowed for high production rates to be achieved with the ‘14” dredges.
