In WW2, the US Military used Funafuti as a base in the Pacific Islands. To facilitate this, it carried out excavation of the reef shelf and constructed hard revetment walls along the inside of the lagoon to allow access for US Navy ships to shore. The deeper water and hard revetments caused wave reflection which denuded the lagoon beach sand.
In 2015, Hall Contracting was engaged to replenish the beach along the lagoon and create a large area of sand to be used by the population as open space. Hall provided a full D&C solution in a very short timeframe, engaging AECOM as the project designers. Key deliverables included the design and construction of reclamation and groynes, the preperation of an EIS, 200,000m3 of dredging and the 2 x 80m (approx.) groynes.
